In a recent discussion about the English translation of the (originally, French) title of the journal Cahiers d’Economie Politique –Histoire de la pensée et théories,  the term “political economy” emerged as the obvious choice. The concern, however, was that if the French “économie politique” (and its Italian equivalent “economia politica”, for that matter) are still in use to name the discipline as a whole, the English political economy in no longer employed in this sense, and refers today to a particular subfield only.

This is indeed an early designation, originally proposed by Antoine de Montchrestien (yes, a Frenchman) in 1615 and soon adopted in many European languages, including English (think of David Ricardo’s Principles of Political Economy and Taxation, 1817, to cite just one example); it was  replaced by economics in the late 19th century (Alfred Marshall’s Principles of Economics, 1890).

In contrast today’s political economy, at the intersection of economics and political science, applies the key tools of modern economics thinking –the assumption of an optimizing agent, with equilibrium reasoning and game theory– to understand the political contexts of markets: voting behaviors, politicians’ incentives, the effects of election years on the economy, etc. Hence, isn’t it misleading to use the term political economy in its old sense, when it may be confused with its new sense, instead of being interpreted as just a synonymous for economics?

However, the old designation has the merit of stressing a persisting feature of the discipline as a whole—namely, its strong linkages with public policy and the role of the economist as an adviser to the policy maker (the “prince” of yesteryear). This specificity still matters a lot, and neatly distinguishes economics from other social sciences. The newer “economics”, instead, sounds very much like “mathematics” as Giorgio Lunghini noted a few years ago –thereby pointing to another persistent feature of the discipline, its constant quest for rigorous thinking.

Which term we use, depends on which aspect we aim to emphasize –and having a choice between the two reminds us of the need to think constantly about the ultimate purposes of our work. Rigor is essential, certainly; but can hardly be an end in itself.
